Gender-responsive AI is a system whose design, data, and deployment actively account for the different ways women, men, and gender-diverse people experience risk, access, and opportunity, rather than assuming a single, ungendered user. It responds to difference by design instead of treating it as noise to be averaged away.
A system calibrated on an undifferentiated population tends to perform best for whoever dominates that population, and worst for whoever does not. Credit scoring, health diagnostics, and content moderation all carry documented gender gaps in accuracy and outcome when this differentiation is absent. Naming the response as gender-specific is what makes the gap visible and correctable.
The A+ Alliance approach: The A+ Declaration calls directly for gender-responsive procurement guidelines, with hard targets and clearly assigned responsibility for organizations and governments deploying automated decision-making. The Gender & AI Innovation Collective extends this into practice, naming the advancement of gender-responsive AI governance frameworks as one of its long-term goals, built through prototypes co-designed with women’s rights organizations across Africa.
