Technology-facilitated gender-based violence, often abbreviated TFGBV, refers to harm directed at a person because of their gender that is committed, amplified, or enabled through digital tools: harassment, stalking, image-based abuse, doxxing, and coordinated online intimidation among them. The violence is not new; the reach and speed of its delivery are.
Digital platforms can turn a single act of harassment into a sustained, searchable, and shareable one. Survivors face harms that persist long after the initiating act, and existing legal and platform-level protections frequently lag behind the pace at which new tools enable abuse. Naming TFGBV as a distinct category is a precondition for building systems, and policies, that address it directly.
The A+ Alliance approach: TFGBV sits explicitly among the focus areas the Gender & AI Innovation Collective invites women’s rights organizations across Africa to address, alongside digital justice, data privacy, and civic engagement. Organizations bring their own knowledge of how this violence manifests in their communities; the Collective provides the technical mentorship, funding, and sandbox infrastructure to prototype and pilot responses.
