Women's rights organizations shape AI by moving from consultation to authorship: defining the problem an AI tool should address, holding decision-making power over its design, and retaining ownership of the finished tool, supported by technical partners rather than directed by them.
Organizations working directly with communities on gender-based violence, health access, or economic exclusion hold the deepest evidence of what actually needs to change. Without a structured pathway into technical development, that evidence rarely reaches the systems being built to address it, and AI solutions end up designed around assumptions rather than lived expertise.
The A+ Alliance approach: The Gender & AI Innovation Collective offers exactly this pathway: eight weeks of community learning on feminist AI, data, and impact assessment, followed by seed-funded prototyping in the Feminist AI Innovation Sandbox, followed by seed-funded piloting in the field. Eligible organizations are civil society groups, interdisciplinary teams, or activist organizations in Africa that are women-led or primarily focused on women’s rights, with a feminist or human rights mission and a commitment to participatory design.
