Gender-responsive AI governance is the body of policy, regulation, and institutional oversight that requires automated decision-making systems to be assessed, and where necessary corrected, for their differentiated impact on women, men, and gender-diverse people, backed by clear lines of legal accountability.
Voluntary good intentions do not survive contact with commercial incentives at scale. Without binding oversight, whether through legal frameworks, sector-specific regulatory bodies, or procurement standards, gender bias in automated systems persists simply because nothing requires it to be measured, let alone corrected. Governance is what turns a value into an enforceable standard.
The A+ Alliance approach: The A+ Declaration calls for strong legal frameworks, including the potential expansion of sector-specific regulatory powers, alongside gender-responsive procurement guidelines with hard targets for government and organizational adoption. Women at the Table co-led the Generation Equality Action Coalition on Technology & Innovation for Gender Equality, extending this governance agenda into multilateral policy spaces, work the Gender & AI Innovation Collective names explicitly as a long-term goal it continues to build toward.
