Generating knowledge around the impact of ICT on social and economic development in Latin America.

About the work

Centro Latam Digital (CLD) generates evidence-based knowledge, strengthens technical capacities and promotes dialogue on the access and adoption of information and communication technologies (ICT) for economic, political and social development in Latin America. CLD conducts evidence-based, interdisciplinary and applied research to address the implications of digital transformation on privacy, data protection, cybersecurity and the digital divide in the region. CLD is partnering with ILDA, with the support of IDRC and the IDB on empatIA (www.empatia.la) to develop new knowledge on the use of AI to solve public problems in Latin America. This initiative aims to: promote a better understanding of how the public sector should develop AI policies for development, considering ethical, political, social and economic aspects; strengthen decision-making capabilities in AI design and implementation and; promote projects that explore the resolution of public problems through the use of AI.

Impact

This initiative will generate and share knowledge on relevant and innovative AI applications to address specific problems in the Latin American context such as: climate change, gender inequality, natural resource management, democratic institutions and government transparency and emergency management (Covid-19). Results from this initiative will be shared with governments and relevant social and academic actors in the region to contribute to the development of public policies and allow for scaling of successful solutions in other sectors and or countries in the region.
