Promoting feminist and inclusive artificial intelligence
This decade there is a unique opportunity to not only mitigate but correct for historic inequities buried in the data, put in the algorithm, implicit in the model, embedded in machine learning, then wired intricately in neural networks. The opportunity, as new systems proliferate and are being designed, is to revisit old assumptions and conceive of social services with ideas of efficacy and equity at the core– to go beyond only digitizing old programs for ‘efficiency’, which enable a more effective Patriarchy 2.0. Feminist AI‘s goal is Inclusive AI harnessed to deliver equality outcomes; designed with inclusion at the core; creating new opportunities & proactive, innovative correction of inequities. The fr network focuses on bringing social programs in line with 21st research and values, dedicated to finding ways to make AI + the technology, more effective, inclusive, and transformational, not only more ‘efficient.

Dominique Charron is IDRC’s Vice-President, Programs and Partnerships in Ottawa, Canada. Prior to being Vice-President, Dominique was the Director of IDRC’s Agriculture and Environment program area. She supervised research focused on increasing agricultural productivity and food security, reducing vulnerability to climate change, and protecting the public against infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases. Dominique joined the Centre in 2006 as head of the Ecosystems and Human Health program. Previously, she managed research programs at the Public Health Agency of Canada. Dominique Charron holds a Ph.D. in epidemiology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Guelph.

Paola Ricaurte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Media and Digital Culture at Tecnológico de Monterrey and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. She was an Edmundo O’Gorman Fellow at the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia University (2018). She is co-founder (with Nick Couldry and Ulises Mejías) of Tierra Común, a network to promote reflection on data colonialism from the Global South. She is a member of the Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms, and Fr, Feminist Artificial Intelligence Research Network, leading the LAC Hub. She was a member of the collective Enjambre Digital for the defense of digital rights in Mexico. Her work focuses on the critical study of digital technologies from a decolonial and feminist perspective.
Dr. Soraj Hongladarom is Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Science, Technology, and Society at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. He has published books and articles on such diverse issues as bioethics, computer ethics, and the roles that science and technology play in the culture of developing countries. His concern is mainly on how science and technology can be integrated into the life-world of the people in the so-called Third World countries, and what kind of ethical considerations can be obtained from such relations. He is a member of the Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms, and Fr, Feminist Artificial Intelligence Research Network, leading the SouthEast Asia Hub.
Raya Sharbain is the Program Coordinator at JOSA. Raya holds an MSc in Human-Computer Interaction from University College London and has participated in ACM SIGCHI conferences such as the 2017 Computer-Human Interaction conference in Denver as a volunteer, and the 2018 Human-Robot Interaction conference as part of a shortlist for the student design competition. Raya is a fierce advocate for usability, open-source technologies, and open knowledge. In the past, Raya has worked in digital fabrication, setting up maker spaces in Azraq town and the Azraq refugee camp. She’s a contributor to Wikimedia projects and Global Voices, and a member of the Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms, and Fr, Feminist Artificial Intelligence Research Network leading the MENA Hub.
