Participatory AI design is a development method in which the people affected by a system take part directly in defining, building, and evaluating it, holding real influence over technical decisions rather than being surveyed after the design is already fixed.
Design teams that lack gender, racial, and disciplinary diversity tend to reproduce their own blind spots in the systems they build, often without noticing. Old, stereotypical assumptions about gender, race, and class have a documented tendency to migrate directly into new automated systems unless the design process is deliberately structured to interrupt that migration.
The A+ Alliance approach: The A+ Declaration calls for gender balance in AI decision-making at every stage, from funding through design to evaluation, and for the employment of a genuinely intersectional range of feminists on design teams, arguing this diversity is what drives both innovation and the detection of harm before deployment. The Gender & AI Innovation Collective puts this into direct practice, building tools with rather than for the organizations they are meant to serve.
