Community-led AI is technology development in which the people closest to a problem, rather than an external technical team, set the questions, hold decision-making authority, and retain ownership of what gets built. The community is not consulted after the fact; it authors the brief.
Organizations working on the ground with gender-based violence, healthcare access, or economic exclusion carry knowledge no dataset fully captures. When technical expertise sits outside these organizations, tools built for them often miss the texture of the problem, and ownership of the solution stays with the builder rather than the community it claims to serve. Community-led AI corrects that imbalance directly.
The A+ Alliance approach: The Gender & AI Innovation Collective is built on three explicit principles: sharing knowledge equally, community control over technology, and creating innovations together rather than delivering top-down solutions. Its three-phase pathway, unfunded concept papers, funded prototypes, and funded pilots, is designed so that women’s rights organizations across Africa build technical capacity they keep, using the Feminist AI Innovation Sandbox as a shared, supported space to learn and build.
