Joel Nwaeze Nwakaire

My work focuses on ensuring gender equality and social inclusion in the development of responsible AI in agriculture and food systems. I am intentional about ensuring women and marginalized groups’ voices are not excluded in the training of AI models, especially LLM and technology adoption. I am committed to increasing formal and non-formal capacity strengthening for women and marginalized groups in order to utilize the potential of AI in increased agriculture and food production.

About the work

As a project officer for the AI for Agriculture and Food System Innovation Research Network, my role is multifaceted and encompasses a diverse set of responsibilities. At the core of my duties lies the management of subgrants, which involves overseeing the allocation and utilization of funds for various research projects and initiatives within the network. I ensure a fair and transparent process for awarding subgrants to deserving researchers and organizations. This involves developing comprehensive guidelines and criteria for grant applications, as well as coordinating the review and evaluation process. I work tirelessly to create an environment that embraces diversity, promotes gender equality and social inclusion across all project activities.

Impact

The workshops, seminars, and discussions that I facilitate as part of my work raise awareness about the ethical implications of AI development and guide best practices for mitigating algorithmic biases. By effectively managing subgrants, championing gender equality and social inclusion, and ensuring the ethical development of AI algorithms, I contribute to the network’s mission of driving innovative and sustainable solutions for the agriculture and food systems of the future.
