Aymur AI: The open source software that helps criminal courts collect open data on GBV from court rulings in Latin America

Team: Ivana Feldfeber, Yasmín Belén Quiroga, Marianela Ciolfi Felice (Data Género, Argentina)

AymurAI measures gender-based violence in Latin America to understand patterns that lead to feminicide. It is an open source software that helps criminal courts collect open data on gender-based violence from court rulings.  Aymur AI is a working pilot that has a great accuracy for criminal court rulings in Argentina. Every step of the development is open source, except for the training data. The team has a synthetic data set that can be used to train a new model without exposing people’s personal information.

AymurAI aims to provide access to artificial intelligence technologies that allow the semi-automatic extraction of  data on gender-based violence. Data Género, the Argentinian-based team behind AymurAI believes that criminal courts can take advantage of these tools to improve the knowledge on gender-based violence in Latin America: collected data could help identify the patterns of violence that might ultimately lead to feminicide; the development of effective policies, and potential remedies to hinder violence and the violent deaths of women and LGBTQ+ people.

Through a holistic approach during its research and prototyping stage, as F<A+i>r funded project, AymurAI sought to understand gender based violence from a judicial perspective to foster a more transparent, innovative and accountable judiciary. In this piloting stage, AymurAI will organize a launching event in Buenos Aires in June 2024 as well as conduct ethnographic research in Criminal Court N°10 and N°14.

In order to achieve an open and gender-sensitive justice, the AymurAI team has 3 main goals for 2024:
  1. Convince more Criminal Courts in Argentina to join the project.
  2. Conduct research through observation and interviews on how the tool is changing the behavior and relationship of the Criminal Court N°10 and N°14 with open data.
  3. Partner with other Spanish-speaking countries that could implement the AI tool.
Additionally, Aymur AI has achieved significant milestones such as: running in Criminal Court No. 10 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It has also won Best Practice / Case Study in UNESCO’s AI and the Rule of Law online training for judicial operators

AymurAI has been showcased in events such as: the AI Forum Government of Jalisco, MozFest, IDEA Initiative, Frontiers of Digital Development Forum, One Young World, the Honorable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation, University of Buenos Aires,  the Khipu Latin America AI Congress, and will present two CRAFT sessions at FaaCT 2024.
