Prototype: La Independiente: Gender perspectives in AI crowd work

How can AI Crowd work become more feminist and fair?

In order to function, algorithms require millions of labeled training data to learn, recognize and categorize information. This labeling is often done by crowd workers who are neglected in system designs and whose well being is seldom considered. Latin American and Caribbean workers have been identified as significant crowd work contributors depending on crowd work as a steady source of income. However most studies on crowd work center around Western women and fail to take into account the personal and professional advancement of Latin American women.

Designing a space for crowd workers to access each other’s knowledge can enhance the quality of their work by empowering them to seek support in addressing challenges in their working conditions. Transparency, fair pay, and opportunities for professional advancement are crucial aspects that should be embodied in the tools available to crowd workers, as advocated by field practitioners and researchers. Documenting their experiences will not only benefit crowd workers in the long run but also enable them to identify areas for improvement in their work environments. This can inform efforts to organize and advocate for respect, fair pay, and transparency from requesters and crowd working platforms.

Despite being promoted as income and employment opportunities in regions with stagnant local economies, there is a lack of initiatives that address the impact of such work in the Global South from a gender perspective, considering that one in every five crowd workers is a woman.

A  working prototype is intended to be released by the end of September 2023.

To facilitate communication between these women crowd workers and help them identify relevant conversations, an intelligent conversational agent will be integrated into the system. The conversational agent will emulate the personality of Latin American heroines and assist users in searching for specific advice, articulating their interests, and navigating the platform. Furthermore, the conversational agent will recommend other crowd working women who might be valuable connections based on shared interests, expertise, and experiences.

In addition during the prototype phase PIT Policy are holding a forum on  feminist design with crowdworkers, platforms and experts discussing what needs to change and what can be done to improve the quality of experience for AI crowd workers in LAC and throughout the globe.
