Yasodara Cordova

I am a technologist working at the intersection of product and policy.

About the work

I work in the governance sector, assisting middle and low-income countries to integrate technology into their governance infrastructures. My work ranges from helping governments with participatory budgeting, to stemming corruption among civil servants, and setting up budget management systems and human resource management tools. Through it all, I identify opportunities to work on gender and inclusion. When considering AI tools, I have to make sure that data collection comes from a gender equality perspective . When considering data modeling, I have to make sure that 1) there are grievance mechanisms in place, such as the right to have a human review machine results and 2) there are previous assessments to challenge bias in the testing phase. Considering socio-technical transitions, I start from the assumption that technology can change policies by design.

Impact

Having field experience with gender inclusion on a technical level might impact best practices for building governance technology that is geared towards the improvement of gender policies in societies in general. The observation of the outcomes and the continuous observation of the societal consequences of technological solutions can be a powerful tool to modify the imbalance in gender and other inequality issues around the world.
