Algorithms, optimization, complexity, and computation into nature and society.

About the work

Broadly interested in understanding and addressing some of the key questions that arise in nature and society from the viewpoint of theoretical computer science. Current focus is on natural algorithms, the emergence of intelligence, and the foundational questions around algorithmic fairness.

Impact

We are ready to pilot this work in order to study impact and implications outside of the lab: 1) Fairness constraints can increase “true” utility 2) “Image search” and “ranking” 3) New algorithms for fixing unintentional bias in online advertisements 4) Polarization 5) Multi-winner elections algorithm deployed in Valais, Switzerland 6) Classification (already used in IBM’s fair classification toolkit) 7) Ranking.
