Decolonial feminist helping AI, tech researchers and developers to integrate gender, social inclusion and intersectional approaches into their work.

About the work

Lucía’s research focuses on the nexus of gender and technology, applying feminist and decolonial approaches to data, artificial intelligence and innovation mainly in the Global South. She used to be the Country Director of Ladysmith’s “Cosas de Mujeres” project in Colombia. Lucía is also a strategic adviser on gender and inclusion projects such as Canada’s International Development Research Centre’s Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) in Africa, the German Corporation for International Cooperation’s (GIZ) Digitalization Cluster, and UNICEF’s U-Report. Lucía is doing a PhD in Cultural Studies at Justus-Liebig-University Giessen as a DAAD Scholar, where she is researching the ethical and governance considerations of the use of AI for gender issues such as preventing and addressing gender-based violence. She previously was a Chevening Scholar and holds an MA in Postcolonial Culture and Global Policy from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Impact

Along with her Ladysmith colleagues, her research and advising work has helped research and technology development teams across Africa and Latin America and international development and humanitarian organizations in the Americas and Europe to collect, analyze, and take action on gender data; apply feminist, decolonial and gender equality approaches to technology ideas and innovations; and assess and evaluate AI interventions’ in the light of feminist standards, human rights and responsible AI.
