New York, April 28, 2020 — The winners of Fast Company’s 2020 World Changing Ideas Awards were announced today, honoring the businesses, policies, projects, and concepts that are actively engaged and deeply committed to flattening the curve when it comes to the climate crisis, social injustice, or economic inequality.
Automated Decision-Making is changing our world, but not necessarily for the better. Bias in artificial intelligence pervasively replicates and therefore amplifies offline inequalities, harming women, girls and other historically excluded groups. The Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms has a proactive agenda to upturn this pattern, and a design for the technology we deserve. This is why Alliance has been honored as a finalist in Fast Company’s 2020 World Changing Ideas Awards in the category of AI and Data. “We are at a critical turning point and need to activate new norms that include the other 50% of the world population with gender equality at the core of algorithms and automated decision-making systems which we will create. This is even more critical coming out of the economic and health systems crisis we are currently going through. Otherwise we will weave sexism, racism and all other current societal inequities permanently into the future fabric of society with no way to weave them out,” says Caitlin Kraft-Buchman, Co-founder of the A+ Alliance, and CEO of Women at the Table.
Renata Ávila, Executive Director of Ciudadanía Inteligente, emphasized that “A healthy democracy depends on social and gender equality. As the systems of the future are being coded, at Fundación Ciudadanía Inteligente we are fixing them from scratch. The algorithms of tomorrow will be inclusive, democratic, feminist, transparent, accountable. That is why our work A Plus Alliance, in alliance with Women at the Table, was recognised by Slate as a World-changing idea. Because we are shaping and designing the world of tomorrow. For better.”
“There seems no better time to recognize organizations that are using their ingenuity, resources, and, in some cases, their scale to tackle society’s biggest problems,” says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Our journalists, under the leadership of senior editor Morgan Clendaniel, have uncovered some of the smartest and most inspiring projects of the year.”
