Systemic gender, racial and intersectional bias sits at the heart of current Artificial Intelligence (AI) and algorithmic decision-making (ADM) processes. Inclusive AI is designed with inclusion at the core to create new opportunities and correct inequities. Our selected initiative focuses on how new AI/ADM algorithms, models, networks, and systems can have a concrete & positive impact on social problems, improving quality of life and correcting historical exclusion. Prototypes use design justice principles, with the most effective prototypes boasting new public and private sector partnerships to actively innovate and correct historical inequities.
Feminist AI‘s goal is Algorithmic Decision-Making and AI harnessed to deliver equality outcomes; designed with inclusion at the core; creating new opportunities & proactive, innovative correction of inequities. The f<a+i>r network focuses on bringing social programs in line with 21st research and values, dedicated to finding ways to make AI & ADM programs, and the technology, more effective, inclusive and transformational, not only more ‘efficient’.
Promoting feminist and inclusive artificial intelligence
We seek to position a proactive diplomacy agenda across the multilateral system to advance the instruments for AI ensuring no one is left behind, and that we all thrive. We will discuss how to bring Inclusive AI into the global AI Diplomacy agenda.
How can feminist methodologies and approaches be applied and be transformative when developing AI and ADM systems? Our Co-Founder, international lawyer Renata Avila is hosting a webinar about it next May 5th at Stanford HAI.
Aligned with SIDA´s agenda and feminist principles, all the <A+> Alliance team will be actively participating and bringing our #FeministAI voices to the #SIF21 this month!
<A+> Co-Founder Caitlin Kraft-Buchman and f<a+i>r network member Dr. Tara Cookson will close the 16 hour around the world Global Digital Development Forum on 5 May with a Keynote session on Leveraging AI & Data for Inclusion and Systems Change.
We are the <A+> Alliance for inclusive algorithms from Costa Rica, Mexico, Thailand, Jordan, Guatemala and Switzerland.
We are hosting a session at #Mozfest with our partners from Latin America, Asia and the Middle East!
The $500K Pandemic Response Challenge, required teams to build effective data-driven AI systems capable of accurately predicting COVID-19 transmission rates and prescribing intervention and mitigation measures that, with testing in “what-if” scenarios, were shown to minimize infection rates as well as negative economic impacts.

For the public & private sector on the sidelines of the UN Business & Human Rights Forum: How can private and public sector AI be leveraged to ensure AI and ADM are unbiased? How can procurement be used to incentivise inclusion and influence of feminists in the conception, budgeting, design, deployment, and monitoring of AI & ADM systems?
The <A+> Alliance is extremely proud to be a founding member with GIZ, IDRC, UNESCO, Mozilla, Radiant Earth, and Makerere University of Open for Good - Inclusive AI Commons with Localized Data
In this crucial moment when AI is transforming the fabric of our society — potentially the greatest global paradigm shift yet — it is crystal clear that the design and deployment of Artificial Intelligence must be grounded in human rights. Similarly, gender equality — the very heart of human rights — must be included in Artificial Intelligence design and deployment. How can a human rights based approach be applied to computer science, engineering and innovation?
What are the most current technical and design approaches to unbiasing algorithms? What methodologies and environments are needed to mitigate bias? What would algorithms or Automated Decision-Making systems that actively correct for bias (rather than only mitigate bias) look like?
Where does traditional data collection go wrong? From a feminist point of view, what would inclusive data collection look like Before, During, After data is gathered? What would a methodology be to create this? How can governments (and other actors) ensure / facilitate ?
In October, November & December, Women At The Table & <A+> Alliance will facilitate a series of webinars on important questions in AI:
Our proposal is reasonable and possible to pilot: open the room and seat women and girls at your COVID-19 table where you are deciding the next tech interventions, including AI interventions, to solve the current crises.
The <A+> Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms is seeking up to two paid technology fellows to pilot algorithms.
New website and resources from our <A+> Advisory Board members Elisa Celis and Nisheeth Vishnoi of Yale University. With special work on Debiasing Data, Ranking, Classification, Online Advertising, Data Summarization, Polarization and Multiwinner Voting.
The Generation Equality Forum —a global gathering for gender equality, convened by UN Women and co-hosted by the governments of Mexico and France in partnership with civil society— announced the leaders of the Generation Equality Action Coalitions, to achieve gender equality and all women’s and girls’ human rights. The Action Coalitions will deliver concrete and transformative change for women and girls around the world in the coming five years, 2020-2025.
In order to place the urgent of COVID-19 response work firmly in the context of the equally urgent need to create new and better systems and new paradigms, and because now is the time to connect the work feminist researchers and thinkers envision for an inclusive and thriving future, the <A+> Alliance co-led by Ciudadanía Inteligente and [email protected], with Gender at Work supported by the International Development Research Centre IDRC, are launching the <A+ Global Directory> AI for Democracy & Women’s Rights.
Nuria Oliver, high commissioner for artificial intelligence at the regional government office, Generalitat Valenciana, has gathered a team of data experts from the Jaume I University, to track how the public is conforming to the government lockdown order and the typical distances people move every day.
Italy is opening a call for scientists, techies, research organizations & companies that have solutions to help tackle #COVIDー19 effectively. In particular, tools for fast testing and diagnosis; privacy-enhancing contact tracking & monitoring. Submit your health innovation!
