DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Equality Now; UNFPA & A+ Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms\n22 September 2026 \nRegister here: https://rightscon.summit.tc/catalog/rightscon-continues-2026 \n  \nAbout the session:  \nSafety by design (SbD) is increasingly promoted as a corporate responsibility standard\, and is emerging as a central debate in setting tech industry standards\, but what does it really mean when defined by those most impacted by digital harm? Too often\, safety by design is framed as a checklist for risk management rather than a transformative commitment to justice\, equality\, accountability\, and rights. Current models privilege corporate interests and global north regulatory contexts\, leaving behind women\, girls\, and marginalised communities in the Majority World who experience the consequences of poorly designed technology and are disproportionately affected by tech-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). \nThis session asks: What if safety by design were defined through feminist principles and human rights obligations rather than corporate compliance?  \nFacilitators will explore: \n• How business models and design choices are felt differently across the world\, exacerbating systemic inequalities and harm\, especially for those most marginalized. \n• The gaps between existing legal duties of care\, corporate due diligence\, and the lived realities of users. \n• What feminist\, rights-based safety by design looks like in practice\, including stronger algorithmic and data use transparency\, survivor-centred human rights impact assessments\, alignment with global tech industry standards\, and corporate accountability in international human rights law. \n• Systemic and design-level reforms\, shaping algorithms\, policies\, and industry practices to reduce risks and prevent harms at the source proactively. \n  \nSpeakers:\nMrinalini Dayal — Manager AUDRi\, Equality Now\nStephanie Mikkelson — TFGBV Specialist\, UNFPA\nAmina Soulimani — Project Director\, A+ Alliance\nTarunima Prabhakar — Co-Founder\, Tattle Civic Technologies\nMallory Knodel — Executive Director\, Social Web Foundation\nIrene Mwemba — Tech Expert\, Independent \n

DESCRIPTION:Rejecting Discriminatory Algorithms: Is Unbiased AI Possible?\n6th Assembly of the Democratic Digital Commons Project\nOnline | 30 September | 18h00–20h30 CEST \nAI systems are already shaping decisions about our lives: who gets an interview\, who receives welfare\, who is flagged as “high risk\,” what we see online\, and who gets access to public space. From AI-powered job interviews to algorithmic welfare systems and biased chatbots\, technologies presented as neutral can reproduce\, and intensify\, existing inequalities. \nThis assembly is part of European Alternatives‘ Democratic Digital Commons (DDC) project\, which explores how citizens can collectively reclaim the governance and future of digital technologies and infrastructures. Each assembly in the series takes on a different facet of AI and new technologies. This session turns to algorithms directly\, asking who gets to design the systems that increasingly govern us\, and what it would mean to design them differently. \nThe assembly asks how algorithms actually work\, where algorithmic bias comes from\, and whether technologies can be built that do not reproduce the systems of power already shaping our world. \nA+ Alliance will present concrete projects and prototypes from across the network\, showing how feminist and anti-discriminatory principles have been translated into working models. The presentation will be followed by a short Q&A and breakout sessions\, where participants can carry these ideas into their own thinking on what alternative algorithmic systems could look like.
