SUMMARY:La Independiente: Gender perspectives in AI crowd work
DESCRIPTION:In order to function\, algorithms require millions of labeled training data to learn\, recognize and categorize information. This labeling is often done by crowd workers who are neglected in system designs and whose well being is seldom considered. Latin American and Caribbean workers have been identified as significant crowd work contributors depending on crowd work as a steady source of income. However most studies on crowd work center around Western women and fail to take into account the personal and professional advancement of Latin American women. \nPIT Policy are holding a forum on feminist design with crowdworkers\, platforms and experts discussing what needs to change and what can be done to improve the quality of experience for AI crowd workers in LAC and throughout the globe. \nCrowd Work Platform Forum: Policy Perspectives Forum \n\nDay One Wednesday 26th\, July 2023\, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Mexico City time\n\n\nDay Two Thursday 27th\, July 2023\, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Mexico’s City time\n\n\nFormat: Online (Zoom)\n\n \nTo confirm your participation\, please register here

SUMMARY:Algorithmic Decision Making: Call for Expressions of Interest
DESCRIPTION:Algorithmic Decision Making systems are being used around the globe. What are new models for delivering and deploying more effective social protection? How can AI with its big data capacity and new social science collaborate “to ensure a higher standard of living for the vulnerable and disadvantaged\, to devise new ways of caring for those who have been left behind\, and more effective techniques for addressing the needs of those who are struggling to enter or re-enter the labour market” ? Join us to hear about our Call. \nThis call focuses on Algorithmic Decision Making Systems (ADMs) in LAC\, SEA and MENA for those whose municipalities and countries currently use ADMs and also for those whose municipalities and countries currently contemplate their use. \nLed by the <A+> Alliance\, a network of technologists\, academics & activists working together to ensure new algorithmic systems do not embed already biased systems into our collective futures\, our mission is to explore new models that reach beyond mitigation of bias and correct for historic inequity in order to help ensure a more fair\, just and inclusive collective future for all. \nDUE DATE FOR APPLICATIONS EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 14 2023! APPLY NOW! \n\n\n\n Call for Expressions of Interest Papers: \nProof of Concept for NEW models of ADMs delivery that could address: \n\n\n\nSocial Service Allocation \n\nHousing lotteries\nSchool allocation\nAid to families with children\nPension allocation\n\n\n\n\nSector Specific Innovation\n\n\n\n\nHealth\nFinancial credit scoring \nEnergy sharing\nCommons or collective models of governance\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Call for Expression of Interest Policies: \nAutomated Decision Making Policy based on 21st century social science best practices: \n\nProcurement processes\nGovernment transparency laws\nAlgorithmic auditing\nOpen government and community based co-creation of ADMs\,etc.\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n Call for Expression of Interest PROTOTYPES: \nPrototypes: Past the proof of concept phase and ready to be built and deployed \nThese prototypes will provide a NEW model of ADMs delivery and have a strong interdisciplinary team inclusive of a social scientist\, technologist\, community organisers\, and a collaboration with or proposed with a municipality to test the prototype.\n\n\n\nThe Call for Expressions of Interest is part of the f<a+i>r feminist AI research network\, supported by IDRC\, a three-year initiative (2021-2024) to research and create new algorithmic and social science models that enhance intersection with core public policy agendas in the Global South.

SUMMARY:The Second Meeting: ‘Algorithmic Decision Making (ADM)\, Feminism and Inclusion in MENA: Unpacking Concepts and Call for proposals
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Manal Jalloul and Nadine Weheba \nModerator: Nagla Rizk \nDate: February 8th\, 2023 \nThe Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D) hosted its second webinar as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) hub of the F<a+i>r Hubs Network titled “Algorithmic Decision Making (ADM)\, Feminism and Inclusion in MENA: Unpacking Concepts and Call for proposals” on Wednesday February 8th via Zoom. Joining the webinar as a speaker was Dr. Manal Jalloul (Founder of AI Lab and NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute\, Certified Instructor and University Ambassador at the American University of Beirut). Dr. Jalloul unpacked concepts of ADM and discussed how it can be harnessed for gender inclusion in MENA. We also discussed the project’s latest call for proposals\, titled: “Incubating Feminist AI: Call for Expressions of Interest Algorithmic Decision Making Systems”. The call focuses on harnessing ADM for more equitable outcomes and models deploying more effective and inclusive social protection in MENA. \n \nKey takeaways: \n\n\n\n\nIt all goes back to data. Due to historical norms and gender discrimination\, there is bias in the data available that is used to create and train ADM systems. Data needs to be more inclusive and representative for ADM systems to work fairly.\n\n\nBias exists in the design of the algorithms themselves; algorithms are designed by people with gender-biases. The teams that develop these solutions need to be diverse in order to prevent human biases from impacting the technology.\n\n\nADMs have the potential to help meet SDGs such as equal health\, gender equality and ending domestic violence.\n\n\nAI can be used to identify inequalities in data and ADM systems. AI and ADM systems must be tested prior to deployment and before using them on a wider scale. We can use AI to test new technologies to ensure that there are no biases of treatment.\n\n\nAI policy-making in MENA needs to be data driven in order for policies to inform our unique needs as a region. AI can be used to extract insights from data such as correlations\, gaps\, inequalities and areas that need attention. We can also use AI to gather data on the impact of policies implemented and make modifications accordingly.\n\n\nOnce datasets are diverse\, they can then include the scope of women who are usually outside of national statistics and data sets such as those in the informal economy whose data cannot be found in national statistics.\n\n\n\n\n \nLink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k_f5BDm_dg \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Data Bias
DESCRIPTION:From new datasets to debasing techniques \n \nWhat’s the news from Africa? And what are the solutions being developed there? The start of our new webinar series with AI4D sharing the work of extraordinary African AI researchers with their counterparts and the world. \n \nINSIDE: Algorithms based on incomplete\, corrupt or biased data; models built from those algorithms that have other additional stereotypical assumptions of gender\, race and class at their core; machines that learn on and codify these ingrained patterns; and the neural networks that detect more complex patterns and newly proxy old stereotypical assumptions — are wiring historic bias\, inequality and discrimination into our new systems. These will evolve into more effective\, and more difficult to dismantle\, digital colonial and patriarchal social structures and governance if we do not act now. \n \nHowever\, this situation presents an opportunity as new systems proliferate and are being designed—to revisit old assumptions and conceive provision of social services with ideas of efficacy and equity at the core — instead of only using the ADM process to digitize old programs opting perhaps for only making them more ‘efficient’. \nA Feminist AI would focus on bringing social programs in line with 21st research and values\, dedicated to finding ways to make the programs more effective (inclusive\, transformational) as opposed to merely more ‘efficient’. \n \nAI4D Webinars: Gender Knowledge Synthesis \nConcept: Sharing the work of extraordinary African AI researchers with their counterparts and the world\, focussing on issues of primordial importance to create a more inclusive and equitable world with AI and emerging technologies. \n \nWhere: Online / Zoom \nWhen: Every 6 weeks \nWho: African researchers from the AI4D family and researchers from Africa working on complementary issues. \nWhat: 45 minute Roundtable with Panel format. 5 minute landscape presentations with moderated discussion followed by Q&A \n

SUMMARY:Incubating Feminist AI: MENA f<a+i>r Hub’s First Network Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Soraj Hongladarom\, Caitlin Kraft-Buchman\, Nadine Moawad\, Nagla Rizk and Amira Salah-\nAhmed. \nModerator: Nadine Weheba \nDate: Wednesday\, Dec 14th 2022 \nThe first Middle East and North Africa (MENA) f<a+i>r Hub’s network meeting was held on Wednesday\n14th Dec 2022 at 3.30pm Cairo local time via Zoom. The Access to Knowledge for Development Center\n(A2K4D) at the American University in Cairo\, School of Business introduced the f<a+i>r Hubs Network\nand brought together key stakeholders in MENA in an action-oriented conversation on how new\ntechnologies such as AI can be harnessed to address MENA’s most pressing developmental problems\nwith focus on gender inclusion. \n \nKey issues discussed: \n\n\nDigital and analogue divides are intertwined and can be exacerbated by AI.\n\n\nFeminists need to invest their efforts in proactively creating the future that we want to live in rather than just reacting.\n\n\nAI can play a role in promoting awareness of the way technology can be intertwined with socioeconomic problems and can be utilized for achieving equality and justice.\n\n\nWhat is coming for humanity is impossible to predict\, but it is necessary to try all approaches to ensure the future is fair for women.\n\n\nThere are high level plans on investing in AI for smart cities\, pensions\, healthcare etc. in the region and in Egypt in particular however there are not enough women or youth present at these tables. No one is currently looking at AI with a feminist lens.\n\n\nThere is a huge disconnect between those working in feminist spaces and those working in tech. We need to bring both groups together to share knowledge and have discussions. We also need to include major stakeholders involved in decision and policy making\n\n\nThere is an urgent need to build an open data platform that hosts data sets from the MENA region to produce AI models for the MENA region instead of relying on tech produced by the West.\n\n\nVideo:\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g5mNxb2wsY&t=3s

SUMMARY:Day Zero: Global Tour of Feminist AI: One Year On
DESCRIPTION:<A+> Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms:\nOne year into our Global project on Feminist AI where are we ? What have we accomplished? \nJoin our <A+> Alliance global group as we discuss where we have been and new paths forward. \nCaitlin Kraft-Buchman\, Women At The Table/ \nJaime Gutérriez Alfaro\, Tecnológico de Costa Rica \nPaola Ricaurte Quijano\, Tecnológico de Monterrey \nNagla Rizk\, American University Cairo/ \nSoraj Hongladoram\, Chulalongkorn University \nSupavadee Aramwith\, Chulalongkorn University \nLaure Tall\, IPAR & GRAIN \nErnest Mwebaze\, Sunbird AI & GRAIN \nFeminist AI‘s goal is AI and Algorithmic Decision-Making that transforms – harnessed to deliver equality outcomes; designed with inclusion at the core; creating new opportunities; focussed on proactive\, innovative correction of inequities. \nOur Alliance seeks to catalyze a global conversation on algorithms that includes gender\, race\, class and region at the core of the code. It looks beyond the important privacy and surveillance conversation to a restructuring of power dynamics. \nIt takes a life cycle approach to data and ML regarding creation\, collection\, deployment and evolution of emerging tech that keeps rights-based approaches firmly at their center. These rights include economic and social rights often less explored in traditional libertarian models of digital rights which have excluded the most marginalized from the conversation and control of their data and destiny. \n \nInclusive Algorithms (<A+>) that challenge old models and create new interdisciplinary avenues for systems change in data\, technology and AI practices are needed in order to correct real-life bias and barriers that prevent individuals\, especially women and youth of the Global South\, Black\, Indigenous and People of Color from creation\, development + deployment of AI systems. This exclusion exacerbates and enables digital colonialism. \nThere are critical connections between Feminist AI\, Decolonial AI\, Indigenous AI and data rights movements. \nThis global\, multidisciplinary panel is meant to inspire and nurture new and old movements who must now work together with the potential to positively transform lives at scale. What is Feminist AI? Why do we need it\, and how is it an integral yet missing part of the global internet conversation? How can it create fundamental change in economic + social systems and human rights? How can we catalyze this global movement from the global south to incorporate those who have been traditionally excluded. \n<A+ > Alliance leaders + AI4D Africa will share research\, policy and technology innovation that can help us leave no one behind\, and to thrive. \nWe launched at IGF 2021 and now have papers & prototypes to share. Where are we at Year One in this journey across the Global South? \nSDG 5 is the core of our work\, although we believe Gender Equality is a transversal goal and with Climate Change (with which we work closely) are the two SDGs to truly cut across all the 17 SDGs. In particular we are involved in partnership SDG 17; working to integrate Climate Change AI with transformative gender equality AI SDG 13; Inclusive transportation in mega-cities and urban settlements. SDG 11; policy work on gender responsive AI at the national\, regional\, and international level SDG 9\, etc.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Concept: Feminist Foreign Policy in Action
DESCRIPTION:Plans for a feminist foreign policy have been put in place by several countries over the past decade. However\, international statistics tell us that the inclusion of women in international decision-making and negotiation mechanisms is often insufficient: in 2022\, women ambassadors average only 21.6% in the world’s 40 largest economies (AGDA Women in Diplomacy Index 2022). Ensuring that women play a key role in discussions and decision-making processes in the different fields of diplomacy could truly take into account women’s voices and rights and make international governance more inclusive. The speakers in this session will present the assets and outcomes that a sustainable feminist foreign policy could ensure\, while making diplomacy more effective and legitimate. In this spirit\, they will explore strategies to move from theory to practical realization of feminist foreign policies and to promote their articulation\, promotion\, and implementation\, through examples of good practices from different regions of the world. \nThis roundtable is an interactive format gathering around 25 high-level and expert participants to exchange on a topic of common interest. After initial contributions from designated speakers (see below) to frame the issues to be discussed and challenges to be tackled\, participants are invited to take the floor on a voluntary basis to share ideas\, inputs\, and lead the discussion towards common understandings and solutions. \nModerator: \n\nMeredith Preston McGhie\, Secretary General\, Global Center for Pluralism\nMs. Anisha Chugh\, Executive Director\, Women’s Fund Asia\nMs. Eunice Musiime\, Executive Director\, Akina Mama wa Afrika\nMs. Hannah Neumann\, Initiator\, Member of the European Parliament\, #SHEcurity\nMs. Lyric Thompson\, Vice President of Policy\, Advocacy and Strategy\, International Center for Research on Women (ICRW)\nMs. Ambika Vishwanath\, Founder Director\, Kubernein Initiative\nMs. Caitlin Kraft-Buchman\, CEO Founder\, Women At The Table
