SUMMARY:Open Studio: Much Distress and Little Relief | Jamie Fuller
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, predictive optimization was introduced into South Africa’s social grant system to detect and counter fraud. As a result\, thousands (and counting) of the country’s most financially vulnerable have been mistakenly excluded from receiving their grant payment. This open studio unpacks the case study\, explaining what went wrong and reflecting on a more productive use of AI. It concludes that while AI may be most alluring in the resource-constrained realities of developing countries\, it is precisely in such contexts that it poses the greatest threat. \nAbout the speaker: Jamie Fuller is a junior researcher at Research ICT Africa\, a Cape Town – based think tank committed to enabling universal and meaningful digital access across the continent. She holds a Masters degree in Philosophy and is especially passionate about everyday ethical dilemmas\, including those associated with advanced data-driven technologies.\n \nJoin the Open Studio by joining the AI Equality Community on Circle!

SUMMARY:Open Studio: Understanding Stakeholder Involvement for Responsible AI Development in Practice | Emma Kallina
DESCRIPTION:How can we better involve affected communities in the development process of AI systems – and what are blockers to this in practice? In this Open-Studio Session\, Emma will provide an overview over her PhD research\, including (1) why we have to involve affected communities during the development of AI systems\, (2) the differences between such stakeholder involvement for responsible AI efforts vs the type of stakeholder involvement currently happening in practice\, (3) the steps required for stakeholder involvement ensuring more responsible systems\, as well as (4) contexts with potential exceptions to such rules. \n  \nAbout Emma Kallina:  Emma Kallina believes that the people impacted by a technology should have substantial influence during the development of such technology. To push this forward\, her research (third-year PhD student at the University of Cambridge) focuses on how the involvement of affected communities during the development of AI systems can support the development of more responsible systems in practice. Her background is in Psychology\, Human-Computer Interaction\, and UX Research. She is a visiting researcher / fellow at the Institute for Technology & Humanity and the Alan Turing Institute. \n  \nJoin the Open Studio by joining the AI Equality Community on Circle!

SUMMARY:In Person Workshop | Towards a Responsible AI Tool for SMEs with Dr. Marwa Soudi
DESCRIPTION:As the Middle East and North Africa Hub of the Feminist AI Research Project (f<a+r>r Project)\, the Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D) at the School of Business at the American University in Cairo ( AUC) is hosting a workshop titled “Towards A Responsible AI Tool for SMEs” on May 12th 2024 at AUC Tahrir Campus at 10am. \nDr. Marwa Soudi will present a tool she developed together with her  research team at Tallinn University\, Estonia\, that aims to assist companies\, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)\, in evaluating and adopting responsible artificial intelligence (AI) practices.  The aim is to support SMEs in evaluating their AI systems from a responsible AI perspective. \nThe workshop serves as a practical resource that enables SMEs to identify areas of improvement and implement responsible AI practices within their organizations. The workshop will be held on May 12th at AUC Tahrir Campus from 10:00 am – 2:00pm. \nFurther information about the workshop: \nThe research team from Tallinn University\, school of digital technologies\,  conducted a comprehensive review to identify the specific needs of SMEs in adopting responsible AI practices. The review highlighted a lack of assessment and educational tools tailored to SMEs\, as well as the importance of involving SMEs in discussions and designs related to responsible AI. \nTo address these findings\, the research team employed a participatory design approach to develop a tool that supports SMEs in their responsible AI adoption journey. The tool is built upon the framework provided by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for responsible AI adoption\, as well as the guidelines outlined in the European Union’s AI Act. \nBy incorporating the OECD framework and the EU AI Act guidelines\, the developed tool provides SMEs with a structured and comprehensive approach to assessing their AI adoption practices in terms of responsibility. This includes evaluating aspects such as transparency\, fairness\, bias\, the environmental impact and ethical considerations in AI systems.

SUMMARY:Responsible AI: Empowering Women's Access to Justice in the Southeast Asia Region"
DESCRIPTION:Responsible AI: Empowering Women’s Access to Justice in the Southeast Asia Region”\nSpeaker: Siraprapa Chavanayarn \nThis talk delves into the complex challenges women in Southeast Asia face in their quest for access to justice. These challenges include societal barriers and individual barriers. The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents transformative opportunities for the justice system\, especially in improving access to justice and ensuring fairness for women. AI has the potential to revolutionize legal proceedings by analyzing complex data\, streamlining case processing\, and providing predictive insights. However\, integrating AI into the justice system also brings significant risks. Concerns such as algorithmic bias could exacerbate existing inequalities\, impeding equitable access to justice. The central argument of this talk is the critical need for Responsible AI in the development and application of AI technologies in these regions. Responsible AI is essential for maintaining fairness\, transparency\, and accountability\, particularly in AI applications within the justice sector. This approach is crucial to ensure that AI tools not only enhance access to justice for women but also uphold and support their rights.
