SUMMARY:In Person Workshop | Towards a Responsible AI Tool for SMEs with Dr. Marwa Soudi
DESCRIPTION:As the Middle East and North Africa Hub of the Feminist AI Research Project (f<a+r>r Project)\, the Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D) at the School of Business at the American University in Cairo ( AUC) is hosting a workshop titled “Towards A Responsible AI Tool for SMEs” on May 12th 2024 at AUC Tahrir Campus at 10am. \nDr. Marwa Soudi will present a tool she developed together with her  research team at Tallinn University\, Estonia\, that aims to assist companies\, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)\, in evaluating and adopting responsible artificial intelligence (AI) practices.  The aim is to support SMEs in evaluating their AI systems from a responsible AI perspective. \nThe workshop serves as a practical resource that enables SMEs to identify areas of improvement and implement responsible AI practices within their organizations. The workshop will be held on May 12th at AUC Tahrir Campus from 10:00 am – 2:00pm. \nFurther information about the workshop: \nThe research team from Tallinn University\, school of digital technologies\,  conducted a comprehensive review to identify the specific needs of SMEs in adopting responsible AI practices. The review highlighted a lack of assessment and educational tools tailored to SMEs\, as well as the importance of involving SMEs in discussions and designs related to responsible AI. \nTo address these findings\, the research team employed a participatory design approach to develop a tool that supports SMEs in their responsible AI adoption journey. The tool is built upon the framework provided by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for responsible AI adoption\, as well as the guidelines outlined in the European Union’s AI Act. \nBy incorporating the OECD framework and the EU AI Act guidelines\, the developed tool provides SMEs with a structured and comprehensive approach to assessing their AI adoption practices in terms of responsibility. This includes evaluating aspects such as transparency\, fairness\, bias\, the environmental impact and ethical considerations in AI systems.

SUMMARY:MENA fa+ir Webinar | Exploring Multidisciplinary at the Data Science Hub
DESCRIPTION:Register for the webinar here \n\nIt gives us great pleasure to invite you to the Access to Knowledge for Development Center (A2K4D)’s upcoming webinar as the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) hub of the F<a+i>r Hubs Network (Feminist AI Research Network).  \n ‘Exploring Multidisciplinary at the Data Science Hub’. \nMeet our speaker: \nDr. Nouri Sakr is an Assistant Professor of Data Science and Operations Research at the American University in Cairo . She is also the founder of the Data Science Hub and a member of the Steering Committee for the Data Science undergraduate program at AUC. Dr. Sakr received her Ph.D. from Columbia University in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research with a focus on Data-Driven Optimization. As an undergrad\, she double majored in Computer Science and Actuarial Science at AUC\, then earned a Masters of Mathematics in Actuarial Science from the University of Waterloo with a focus on FinTech. Her research focuses on leveraging connections between data science and combinatorial optimization to design data-driven algorithms that efficiently tackle real-world optimization challenges with social impact. At Amazon and Microsoft\, she worked on supply chain analytics\, dynamic inventory allocation and cloud storage traffic problems. \nDuring her Ph.D. journey and as an affiliate of the Data Science Institute at Columbia University\, she accumulated further experience on building fast machine learning frameworks and adaptive machine learning in cybersecurity through her collaborations with Google Brain and Sandia National Labs. She also built healthcare solutions for Columbia Medical Center. She briefly collaborated on foster care matching through her work at Graham Windham in NYC and designing ML algorithms for unemployment reduction through her collaboration with the J-PAL program and an Egyptian startup. In 2020\, she founded the DataScience Hub as a collaboration platform for academics and industry professionals as well as research scholars from Egypt and abroad. The projects at the DSH apply data science techniques in interdisciplinary areas\, such as in education\, healthcare\, fintech\, system scheduling and economics. The DSH aims at using data science to solve problems that have an impact on social good. \n
