In this challenging moment the <A+> Alliance, supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), has launched a Feminist AI Research network.
Promoting feminist and Inclusive artificial intelligence: While there is huge potential in artificial intelligence technologies to revolutionize development, the challenge is that the data and the models that support the recommendations that fuel these systems often contain historical biases, or incorrect assumptions about gender, race, and class that can lead to bias and harms within these systems, which are trained to recognize patterns and predict new ones. The f<a+i>r (feminist AII research) network is dedicated to finding ways to make Artificial Intelligence and related technologies more effective, inclusive and transformational, not only more ‘efficient’.
This three year initiative will take advantage of the opportunity to not only address bias, but re-think how we prototype and pilot applied AI research and solutions to ensure that it meets the needs of women and girls in vulnerable communities. This project will be one of the first of its kind to support this kind of research which seeks to address policy, practice, and innovation, and we invite innovators, like-minded governments and others to join this emerging coalition as the work commences – particularly those in low and middle income countries who want to explore the positive potential of artificial intelligence in advancing gender equality. We believe that now is the time to connect the work feminist researchers envision for an inclusive and thriving future.
